A commitment to show up and write my truth | Day 275 of 365

Apparently the internet has decided October is the new January. They're calling it the October reset: a chance to take a hard look at your life, build better habits, and turn into a brand-new person before the holidays hit.

Normally, being told I need another reset would just wear me out.

This one made me sit up.

I'm a Libra, and October has always been my month. For as long as I can remember, fall has felt like the real start of the year to me. The air turns, the light gets low and golden, and beginning again seems possible without all the noise and pressure January brings.

But I don't want to reinvent my whole life this October. I want to feel better inside the one I'm already rebuilding. If you've been scrolling past all those lists of things to fix and feeling tired instead of inspired, I think you might want that too.

My October Reset Begins With Taking Care of Myself

Part of my promise to show up and write my truth is admitting when I haven't been taking good care of myself.

I haven't.

My hair is staging an intervention. My nails are begging for an appointment and a little attention. I need clothes that fit the woman I am right now, not the one I used to be, not the one I might become someday, and definitely not the one whose wardrobe is sitting in a storage unit.

Hello, October. Here's my Amex.

I know that can sound frivolous next to everything I've written about healing and nervous systems and uncertainty. But taking care of yourself isn't always the deep work. Sometimes it's resting, or eating something that actually nourishes you, or finally calling the doctor. And sometimes it's a haircut or touch up, because every time you pass a mirror it seems to ask whether the two of you have given up.

You probably know how that goes. Everyone else's needs come first for so long that the small things slide, and then one day you catch your reflection and realize you haven't really looked at yourself in months.

On Day 274 I wrote about not treating my body like a problem to solve, and this is the same thought. I'm not trying to fix myself or become more acceptable. I'm looking after the person who has carried me through this enormous transition. I want to feel renewed. I want to recognize myself again.

I'm Rebuilding My Businesses, Not Starting From Nothing

October is also National Women's Small Business Month, which feels like the right time to say out loud that I'm rebuilding my businesses with a fresh perspective.

I took apart systems that used to work, because I knew they wouldn't carry me where I wanted to go next. I gave up income. I handed off responsibilities. I questioned plans I'd held onto for years and made decisions without any proof yet that they'd pay off.

The old ways are finished. The new results haven't shown up.

That in-between can make you feel like you're starting over, but I'm not starting from nothing. I'm starting with years of experience, clearer standards, lessons I'd rather not repeat, stronger boundaries, and a much better sense of what I want my businesses, and my life, to feel like.

My businesses will be successful. I know it.

I can't point to the results yet or tell you how every piece will fall into place. It's more like knowing a season has ended before the weather catches up. I'm standing at the edge of something that isn't fully here in the 3D yet, and I realize how that sounds.

It also feels completely true.

You Don't Need an Entirely New Life

Who hasn't made a beautiful monthly plan and dropped it about four days later?

We buy the planner. We write the list. We decide this is the month we'll wake up early, exercise every day, drink enough water, clean out every closet, fix our finances, grow the business, heal our childhood, and become the kind of person who remembers to defrost dinner. Then life goes on being life, and we decide we've failed again.

I don't want change that comes from criticism anymore. I want the kind that feels like renewal, the kind that comes from knowing something better is already unfolding even when I can't see it yet.

Your October reset might not need twelve goals. It might be one appointment. One boundary. One honest conversation, or one promise to stop abandoning yourself every time life gets busy.

You may not need to reinvent your life at all. You may just need to take care of the person who's living it.

If Nobody Has Told You Lately

If you're standing where I am, past the ending but unable to see the new beginning clearly, there's something I want you to hear.

Keep going, sweetheart. You're doing great.

It has already worked out, even if the proof hasn't arrived. You may be carrying things nobody knows about, and quietly holding your family, your work, your grief, and your hope together while wondering why nobody seems to notice how much that takes.

I notice. I know how heavy it is.

You're doing an amazing job, and you're worthy of the life you're working toward, including the parts nobody can see yet. You don't have to earn your new beginning by becoming perfect first.

As for me, I'm walking into October grateful. Grateful for what ended, even though the ending hurt. Grateful for what's taking shape, even though I can't hold it yet. Grateful for the businesses I get to rebuild and the woman who's emerging alongside them.

She needs a haircut, a manicure, and a few new outfits.

But she's coming.

And I think she's going to be magnificent.

About the Author | Day 275 of 365

I'm a soul-led coach, entrepreneur, mother, and recovering perfectionist, currently navigating healing, uncertainty, temporary chapters, motherhood, work, big transitions, grief, nervous system healing, overstimulation, emotional growth, and the ongoing lesson that life works a whole lot better when we stop trying to carry everything alone. Today that lesson looked like welcoming an October reset without demanding that I reinvent my entire life, and trusting that what I'm building has already worked out, even if I can't see all of it yet.

Day 275 of 365. Still showing up. Still grateful. Still handing October my Amex and trusting the woman who's emerging. 🐧
