The American Dream Begins with Gratitude
Today, America celebrates 250 years. Happy Birthday, America.
Like many of you, I'll spend today with family, watching fireworks, making memories, and celebrating. But before the festivities begin, I wanted to pause for something we don't always make enough time for—gratitude.
When I think about the American Dream, I don't think first about wealth or success. I think about freedom. The freedom to dream, to start over, to build a life, and to create opportunities for the next generation.
It's easy to take freedom for granted when you've always known it. Life gets busy. We rush from one responsibility to the next, frustrated by traffic, long lines, slow Wi-Fi, and the countless little inconveniences that fill our days. Somewhere along the way, we forget that many of the things we consider ordinary are privileges millions of people around the world still hope for.
Freedom is so much more than the ability to wave a flag. It's the freedom to dream, to start over, to build a business from an idea, to speak your mind, to practice your faith, to vote, to own a home, to raise your children according to your values, and to become the person God created you to be.
None of those freedoms happened by accident. They were secured by generations of brave men and women who chose service over comfort, sacrifice over convenience, and something greater than themselves.
Today, I'm also thinking about my parents. Before my father ever had the chance to go to college, he left everything he had ever known in search of a better future. My mother joined him later so they could begin building their life together in America. Together, they left behind their families, their friends, and everything that was familiar.
Life wasn't easy. They worked incredibly hard, and every dollar mattered. If my mother missed her family, she couldn't simply pick up the phone the way we can today. Calls were expensive, visits were rare, and home was suddenly an ocean away.
As a child, I knew they sacrificed. As an adult, I finally understand just how much. They gave up so much so that future generations—including me, and now my daughter—could have opportunities they never had. To me, that's one of the greatest expressions of love there is.
Years ago, while traveling in Mexico, a young girl approached me asking for money. I reached into my pocket to help, and within moments several more children surrounded me. I still think about that day because it reminded me how different life can look depending on where you're born. It reminded me never to take clean drinking water, the opportunity to work, or the chance to build a better life for granted.
The American Dream Is a Gift and a Responsibility
Freedom is both a gift and a responsibility. It's the responsibility to use our voices with integrity, to work hard, to tell the truth, to help our neighbors, to build something meaningful, and to leave this country a little better than we found it.
To every veteran, every active-duty service member, every first responder, and every person whose courage and sacrifice have protected the freedoms we enjoy today—thank you. Your service has made lives like mine, and the lives of countless others, possible in ways words can never fully express.
And to my daughter, if you ever read this years from now, I hope you always remember that freedom isn't something we're entitled to. It's something we're called to honor. It has been built on sacrifice, strengthened through hard work, protected by courage, and preserved by ordinary people willing to do the right thing, even when it came at a great personal cost.
My hope is that 250 years from now, America will still be a place where truth matters, kindness is valued, faith is protected, hard work is respected, and gratitude is never out of style—a place that remembers those who came before us and continues to create opportunities for those who come after.
Happy 250th Birthday, America. May we never take the gift of freedom—or the people who have protected it—for granted.
About the Author | Day 185
I'm a writer, entrepreneur, mother, soul-led coach, and recovering perfectionist, learning every day what it means to heal, grow, build businesses, raise a family, and live a life rooted in faith, gratitude, and purpose.
For 185 days straight, I've shown up here through business challenges, healing, motherhood, travel, uncertainty, laughter, tears, and more toddler adventures than I can count. Each day has taught me something a little different, but one lesson keeps finding its way back to me: gratitude changes the way we experience life.
I write for the dreamers, the entrepreneurs, the healing hearts, the parents, the overthinkers, and anyone searching for hope in the middle of real life. I believe freedom is both a gift and a responsibility. It's an invitation to build something meaningful, to love generously, to speak with kindness, to stand up for what's right, and to leave the world a little better than we found it.
Day 185 is a reminder that the opportunities we enjoy today were made possible by the courage, sacrifice, and perseverance of those who came before us. My hope is that we honor their legacy not only with celebration, but by living with gratitude, working hard, helping one another, and never taking our freedoms for granted.
Happy 250th Birthday, America. ❤️
