Cabo Verde at the World Cup: The Team That Won the World's Heart

I showed up to the Argentina vs. Cabo Verde World Cup match to cheer for Lionel Messi. I left cheering for something a whole lot bigger.
That night reminded me of something I keep having to relearn: the best lessons rarely come from the team everyone expects to win. They come from the underdog who just won't stop believing. Cabo Verde was about to prove exactly that.
Like most of the 64,000-plus people crammed into that sold-out stadium, I wore blue and white. Messi jerseys stretched in every direction. Everywhere I turned, Argentina fans filled the stands.
Well—almost everywhere.
High up in one corner sat a small pocket of blue that wasn't Argentina blue. It belonged to Cabo Verde.
Cabo Verde Was About More Than Soccer
Before kickoff, we'd been texting a friend from Cabo Verde. He'd wanted tickets badly, but the prices had climbed out of reach.
"We are wearing Messi jerseys," my husband wrote.
"Okay… for Messi, I understand," he wrote back.
I laughed. What I didn't know yet was that by the end of the night, I'd understand something too.
Honestly, before this World Cup, plenty of people probably couldn't have found Cabo Verde on a map. We could—but mostly because we'd heard how kind and welcoming its people are, and because we happen to know one of the best of them.
This little island nation off the west coast of Africa, home to just over half a million people, had suddenly landed on one of the biggest stages in sports. And they captured the world's heart.
Every time I glanced up at their section, they were doing the same thing: singing, dancing, clapping, cheering. Even when the match wasn't going their way.
So I texted our friend. "I love the spirit of your fans. Even when things look rough, they never stop."
His reply made me grin. "No stress. That's our motto."
A few minutes later—GOAL.
I was on my feet before I even thought about it. For about five seconds, I was not the most popular gal in the Argentina section. Though I'm pretty sure a couple of Cabo Verde fans nearby appreciated the enthusiasm.
Lifelong Messi and Argentina fan or not, I couldn't help it. How could you not be happy for them?
Then they scored again—and I'll be honest, it was one of the most beautiful goals I've ever seen.
What happened next is what really stuck with me. The whole stadium shifted. Thousands of Argentina supporters sank back into their seats. The buzz drained out of the air, and you could feel the tension creeping in.
But that little Cabo Verde corner? They got louder. They kept singing. Kept dancing. Kept believing. Winning or losing, their spirit never wavered.
Later, I was telling my best friend—another die-hard Argentina and Messi fan—about the game.
"I have to confess I was secretly rooting for them," she texted.
"Me too."
We'd both quietly caught ourselves rooting for Cabo Verde. Not because we wanted Argentina to lose, but because sometimes you witness courage and joy and love so contagious you just have to see where it goes.
Argentina won the match. But Cabo Verde walked away with something no scoreboard tracks—the admiration of millions.
What Cabo Verde Taught Me About Heart
We tell ourselves we need the biggest platform. The biggest audience. The biggest budget. The biggest following.
Cabo Verde reminded me none of that creates heart. Heart creates heart.
Maybe today you feel like the smallest person in the room. Maybe you're building something nobody else believes in yet. Maybe you're wondering if your dream is simply too big. Maybe nobody is cheering for you.
Remember Cabo Verde. Remember the fans who never stopped singing. Remember the players who never stopped believing. All it takes is one section cheering.
Keep showing up. Keep believing. Keep dancing anyway. Because the scoreboard doesn't always tell the most important story—sometimes your courage does.
Thank you, Cabo Verde, for reminding the world that every one of us has a little of that spirit inside.
And friends, I hope we never lose it.

About the Author | Day 186
I'm a writer, entrepreneur, mother, soul-led coach, and recovering perfectionist who believes life has a way of teaching us—if we're paying attention. Sometimes the lessons come through quiet conversations. Sometimes through hard seasons. And sometimes they show up in the middle of a sold-out stadium.
For 186 days straight, I've shared reflections on healing, entrepreneurship, motherhood, faith, gratitude, travel, and all the beautifully imperfect moments that make us who we are. I don't write because I've got life figured out. I write because I'm still learning right alongside you, and I hope something from my journey gives yours a nudge.
Today's lesson came from Cabo Verde, a small island nation that refused to let the odds define them. It reminded me that courage has nothing to do with your resources, your audience, or how many people expect you to succeed. It's about your willingness to keep showing up, keep believing, and keep giving your best—even when the world has already crowned someone else.
So if you're staring down something that feels impossible today, hold onto this: never let the size of your challenge make you forget the size of your heart. Sometimes that's exactly what changes the game.
