Finding Beauty in Everyday Life Begins with Looking Up

We spent hours on the highway today, driving through what looked, at first, like the same scene playing on a loop: trees, then more trees, a flash of water, and then more green. Mile after mile of it.
Honestly, it felt a little dull. The sameness of it lulled me into tuning out—nothing new, nothing demanding my attention, just the same stretch repeating itself. But somewhere along the way, I caught myself. And that's when it hit me: the repetition wasn't the boring part. It was the magic. The very thing I'd written off as monotonous was actually the earth showing off, quietly and endlessly, and I'd almost missed the whole show.
Because once I really looked, the green stopped being just green. It was a hundred shades of green, all at once. The grass ran from bright, almost yellow-green in the sunlit patches to a cool, deep emerald in the shade. The trees did the same—some were dark and almost black-green, others soft and nearly the color of sage, and a few were so light they looked like they were still waking up. The sun caught the brighter leaves and set them glowing. Red and pink flowers turned up along the roadside. Every river we passed sparkled where the light hit the water. Birds lifted off the fields, and the whole living world outside my window seemed to hum along with us.
Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.
The sky, the trees, the flowers, the water, the animals—all of it had been there the entire time, quietly offering itself up. I'd just been too fixed on the miles ahead and the destination waiting at the end to notice. And it was soul-soothing in a way I didn't know I needed.
It brought the beginning of Psalm 23 to mind:
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul."
I've read those lines more times than I can count, but today they were unfolding right outside my window. The green pastures—every shade of them. The still waters. The light dancing across the rivers. And underneath it all, a quiet reminder—that nature has a way of restoring us, but only when we slow down long enough to let it.
Finding Beauty in Everyday Life Means Looking Again
Beauty doesn't always ask for a new destination or some grand, unforgettable experience. Sometimes the gift is hiding in the very thing we've decided is ordinary—the same view, the same drive, the same stretch of trees we've stopped really seeing.
What started out as boring became one of the best parts of my day. Same road. Same trees. Same water. The only thing that shifted was me—my willingness to look instead of just glance, to let the scenery in instead of counting down the miles. And the moment I did, the whole drive turned into something worth remembering.
Nothing outside had changed. I'd simply started paying attention.
About the Author | Day 211
I'm a coach, writer, entrepreneur, and mother—and someone still learning to pay closer attention to the life happening right in front of me.
Writing every day has a way of catching the moments I'd otherwise rush past. Today it was a plain stretch of highway, reminding me that even the most ordinary view—the sky, the trees, the countless shades of green, the water, the wild little bursts of nature along the way—can soothe the soul if we take the time to really see it.
I hope this nudges you to slow down, look again, and notice where your own cup might already be overflowing.
