The Myth of Catching Up: Embracing Micro Surges in a Fast-Paced World

Modern life carries a strange, relentless pressure to constantly feel like you are “catching up,” whether it is with your career, your personal goals, or the idealized version of who you thought you would be by now. For a long time, I bought into this myth completely, believing that if things were not moving forward fast enough, it inherently meant I was doing something wrong. I have realized that sustainable growth does not come from a constant sprint, but from leaning into micro surges—those intentional, focused bursts of energy that honor our current season of life.
I remember the profound friction of building multiple businesses simultaneously while living in the heart of New York City. Everything felt painfully slow, and for every step forward, we took two steps back, and sometimes ten. We made plenty of mistakes, and while we were desperately trying to figure things out, it seemed like everyone around us was executing perfectly. When you watch other people grow quickly and "get it right," a quiet, heavy thought begins to creep in: Everyone else is moving forward, and I am stuck.
But life has a beautiful, funny way of revealing its truths slowly. Eventually, I realized that the entire concept of “catching up” assumes we are all running the exact same race. We aren't.
The Power of Micro Surges in Motherhood and Business
Before my daughter was born, work was the absolute center of my universe. I was hyper-independent, blissfully free from coordinating schedules, securing childcare, or planning my days around anyone else’s immediate needs. Life moved entirely on my timeline, fueled by a constant need to prove my worth through productivity.
Today, my days look entirely different. Instead of uninterrupted hours, I work in what I call micro surges. Sometimes, this looks like a hyper-focused burst of work while my daughter plays nearby, and other times, it happens early in the morning, late at night, or in stolen minutes during the middle of the day. If she needs me, everything pauses. It is a rhythm I never knew before, and while it might appear fragmented from the outside, the deep, honest truth is that these little, interwoven moments are where life actually happens.
The Commitment That Changed Everything
When I embarked on my 365-day blog challenge, I did it for a multitude of reasons. It was a firm commitment to myself, a strategic way to build Karma Penguin, and a necessary discipline practice. Writing every single day sounds simple until you are in the trenches, hitting “publish” at 11:58 PM after an exhausting day.
However, this practice began to change me. I started noticing the quiet, everyday moments I would have otherwise rushed past. I became more authentic, open, and compassionate, witnessing my life as it was unfolding. These small wins—like a stranger reaching out to say a post resonated or my best friend telling me she felt "seen"—confirmed that the work truly mattered.
The Reality of the Working Mother
Being a working mother is not just about balancing your time; it is about holding two massive identities at once. There are hidden layers of mental load and the quiet fear that others will assume you are less capable now. But then my daughter laughs, and everything snaps back into crystal-clear perspective. Her laugh is a magical sound that instantly melts the anxiety away.
Life is not a race. We are all building something different—companies, families, healing, or ourselves. If I could go back a year, I would tell myself: You are doing better than you think. Everything does not need to happen this year. The businesses will grow, and the time you spend holding your daughter will never be wasted.
You are not falling behind. You are building a life. And sometimes, the most magnificent things we build simply take time.
About the Author | Day 72
On Day 72 of my 365-day journey toward radical authenticity, I am finding my footing at the intersection of motherhood and entrepreneurship. As the founder of Karma Penguin, I am dedicated to sharing the raw, unscripted reality of building a legacy through micro surges rather than the traditional, soul-crushing hustle. My work is rooted in somatic healing, nervous system regulation, and the belief that we are at our most powerful when we refuse to play small.
Whether I am documenting my descent into truth or navigating the beautiful chaos of life with my daughter, my mission remains the same: to help you reclaim your worth and move at the sacred speed of your own soul.
Thank you for being part of this journey toward abundance, cosmic alignment, and collective light, Dear Reader. ❤️
