A Gentle Reminder to Slow Down When Your Body Says Pause

When Your Body Says "Pause"

This morning I drove back into the city with my toddler buckled in her car seat and a calendar packed with appointments It should have been just another day of "to‑dos", but midway through I felt my body whispering that it couldn't keep up. We had changed our flight at midnight, and the angels at the airline made it painless – only a small fare difference and we were on our way. Little moments of kindness like that remind me that even a hectic schedule has room for grace.

Listening to Your Body When Life Gets Hectic

May 19 is the 139th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar – the perfect marker for Day 139 in my series. Today's entry isn't about how much we accomplished. It's about acknowledging that sometimes, even with a million things to do, your body needs you to slow down.

Why is that important? Mental‑health experts note that when your body says pause, it's creating space for your nervous system to access calming neurotransmitters like GABA, enabling you to respond intentionally to anxiety and stress. When you allow yourself even a brief pause, you create space to check in with your emotions and values.

What Happens When Your Body Says Pause

You respond instead of react. Taking a breath lets you choose a response that aligns with your values rather than simply reacting to stressors.

You remember your worth. Slowing down helps you reconnect with your innate value as a human being and practice self‑compassion.

You cultivate awareness. Pausing creates what therapists call a "pocket of intentional pause," a moment to notice what you need and honour those needs.

Closing Thoughts

Changing our flight today reminded me that the universe often meets us halfway when we let it. More importantly, today reminded me that rest is not a setback – it's fuel. If your body feels heavy and your mind keeps racing, give yourself permission to move at a gentler pace. You are not behind; you're human, and slowing down when your body says pause is sometimes the most powerful move you can make.

About the Author | Day 139

I'm a soul-led coach, writer, mother, and recovering perfectionist who just wrapped 139 straight days of showing up here — from racing thoughts at 2:47 AM and navigating airline changes with a toddler in tow, to learning that slowing down isn't weakness but wisdom, and now, honoring the whisper of a body that says "pause" even when the calendar screams "go."

I work with overthinkers, nervous-system warriors, people who've been taught that rest is lazy, and anyone who's ever felt their body begging them to stop but didn't know they had permission.

I believe in the power of listening to your body before it shouts, trusting that your worth isn't tied to your productivity, and letting rest coexist with ambition. This space exists for the ones doing life at full speed with tender hearts, for the ones who know that slowing down — physically or energetically — is less about falling behind and more about coming home to yourself.

One intentional pause, one gentle breath, one "yes" to rest at a time. ❤️
