Personal Growth: The Person I Was Six Months Ago Wouldn't Recognize Me

Personal growth reflection: woman journaling at a cozy desk beside a mirror, comparing who she was six months ago to who she is today on Day 193 of Karma Penguin.

Today was one of those days that reminds you how much can shift without anyone else noticing. From the outside, it looked completely ordinary. It wasn't.

I had two hard conversations where honesty mattered more than keeping everyone comfortable. In one, I heard myself say, "This is the truth, and you need to hear it." In the other, I hit a line I wasn't willing to cross. "I can't be part of this," I told them. "You're free to make your own choices, but I won't pretend something's true when it isn't."

Then came three setbacks, almost back-to-back. On top of that, there's a road trip we're trying to plan, work deadlines circling, and all the everyday responsibilities that don't take a break just because life feels heavy.

Six months ago, a day like this would have wrecked me.

I would've replayed every conversation, second-guessing whether I said too much or not enough. I'd have laid awake trying to solve tomorrow before it even arrived, convinced that one hard day meant everything was collapsing.

Today was different. Not because life got easier—because I was different.

That thought actually stopped me for a second. Maybe this is what personal growth really looks like. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just those quiet moments when you notice you're meeting life differently than you used to.

The Fear Still Shows Up—I Just Notice It Sooner

The woman I was half a year ago wouldn't recognize me, and it's not because I've become fearless. I still get anxious. I still overthink. Fear still turns up now and then, whispering that it should be running things.

The difference is that I catch it earlier now. I don't hand it the wheel anymore. When I react in a way I'm not proud of, I apologize, learn what I can, and keep moving—instead of dragging it behind me for days. What used to flatten me has become something I can actually work through. Sometimes that takes hours. Sometimes just minutes. And honestly, that might be one of the greatest gifts healing has given me.

Personal Growth Starts on the Inside

Looking back, I can see that the past six months have been one long practice in letting go of things I was never meant to control:

  • Where we'll end up living

  • My businesses

  • Our finances

  • My healing

  • Motherhood

  • The future, and the timing of all of it

For the longest time, I believed my job was to figure everything out. Now I understand my job is simpler than that—just to be faithful to the next step. The future belongs to God.

If I could sit next to the woman I was six months ago, I'd take her hand and tell her the truth:

You're going to cry more than you can imagine. You're going to doubt yourself. You'll face heartbreak you never saw coming, and there will be moments you wonder if you're strong enough to keep going. But what feels like it's breaking you is really your heart making room for who you're becoming.

One day you'll wake up and realize the storms haven't gone anywhere. You've just learned to walk through them differently. Healing was never about turning into someone else. It was about becoming more fully yourself.

Maybe that's what personal growth really is. Not the absence of hard days. Not having every answer. Not some flawless life. Just a quieter mind. A steadier heart. A deeper faith. More peace, more joy, more love.

Six months ago, I'd have stayed up trying to solve tomorrow. Tonight, I'll say my prayers, kiss my family goodnight, trust that tomorrow will come when it's supposed to, and go to sleep.

Because somewhere along the way, I quietly became someone the woman I was six months ago wouldn't recognize. And somehow, I think she'd smile.

Waddle on. 🐧 ❤️

About the Author | Day 193

I'm a soul-led coach, writer, entrepreneur, mother, and recovering perfectionist—still learning that healing isn't about becoming someone new. It's about finding my way back to who God made me to be, before fear, perfectionism, and life's hardest seasons convinced me I had to be anyone else.

For 193 days straight, I've shown up here—through joy and heartbreak, business wins and unexpected setbacks, motherhood, unanswered prayers, healing, and a thousand ordinary moments that changed me long before I realized it. Karma Penguin has never been about having it all figured out. It's about telling the truth, choosing hope anyway, and trusting that God often does His best work beneath the surface, where we can't see it yet.

I write for the overthinkers, the healing hearts, the entrepreneurs carrying invisible weight, the parents doing their best, and anyone who's ever wondered whether they're actually making progress. If that's you today, I hope these words remind you that personal growth isn't measured by how few hard days you have. Sometimes it's measured by the quiet strength you pick up while walking through them.

Day 193 is a reminder that one of the clearest signs of growth is looking back and realizing you've become someone your past self would barely recognize—and someone she would've smiled at.

Tomorrow is a new day, and it's full of hope and possibility. ❤️
