Sometimes, Self-Care Means Taking the Weekend Off

Today is Friday, August 21st, and I'm taking the night off.

Actually — I'm taking the whole weekend.

And after the week we've had, I don't feel one ounce of guilt saying that out loud.

I need it.

Monday will come. I'll make the lists, handle what needs handling, work through the things I've fallen behind on, and drink an unreasonable amount of coffee while doing all of it. That's fine. That's Monday's job.

But tonight?

Tonight, I'm done.

And I think sometimes that is what self-care actually looks like — not a face mask, not a morning routine, not a perfectly curated wellness ritual. Sometimes it's just knowing when for now is enough, and letting that be okay.

When Life Gets Hard, You Don't Have to Turn It Into a Lesson Yet

This week has been hard in ways I'm not going to get into here. Some things need more time. And honestly, some weeks don't need to be wrapped up into a life lesson while you're still living through them.

That's allowed, too.

But somewhere in the middle of everything, something small happened. Something quiet. And it reminded me how often I make life so much harder than it actually has to be.

Real Self-Care Is Letting Yourself Choose the Easier Way

There was something I wanted to do this week, and I had already decided exactly how it needed to be done.

The right way. The proper way. The way I had mapped out in my head as the only way that counted.

But there was another way.

An easier one.

It wasn't necessarily how I'd want to do things forever. It may not even be the most sustainable solution long-term. But for this particular week, in this particular season of exhausted and overwhelmed and barely keeping it together — it worked.

So I did it.

I cut the corner.

And you know what happened?

Absolutely nothing.

Nobody got hurt. The world kept turning. The thing got done. The only difference was that it wasn't done the way I had decided it should be done.

That little word.

Should.

I wonder how much extra weight we carry because of it. How many times do we tell ourselves there's one correct way to be a good mother, a good wife, a good friend, a good business owner, a good human being — and then quietly punish ourselves every time we don't hit that invisible mark?

How often do we make something ten times harder because somewhere along the way, we decided that easier meant lazy? Careless? Not good enough?

Maybe sometimes easier is just... easier.

And maybe — stay with me here — that is allowed.

There are seasons when we have the energy to do things beautifully, thoughtfully, exactly the way we pictured them in our heads. We show up fully, we give our best, and it feels like enough because it is enough.

And then there are weeks like this one.

Weeks where getting through the thing in the kindest, gentlest way possible is the accomplishment. Weeks where surviving with your sense of humor still mostly intact deserves a quiet round of applause.

This was one of those weeks.

Giving It to God and Actually Leaving It There

I don't want to spend this night trying to squeeze a profound answer out of everything that happened. I don't need to solve every problem before I give myself permission to smile again.

Tonight, I want to laugh. I want to have fun. I want to pray. I want to surrender the things I've been turning over and over in my mind and finally say — God, I genuinely don't know what to do with this. So I'm giving it to You.

And then I want to actually leave it there.

At least for tonight.

Because maybe when life gets really hard and you don't know what to do, sometimes the answer is that you don't do anything yet. You stop. You breathe. You let somebody make you laugh until your stomach hurts. You sit with the people who love you without needing to explain a single thing. You eat something good. You watch something completely ridiculous. You pray. You surrender. You remember that a hard week is still allowed to have a beautiful night inside of it.

That last part feels important to me.

Joy doesn't have to wait until everything is fixed.

We are allowed to laugh while life is still unfinished.

We are allowed to rest while there are still things left on the list.

We are allowed to choose the easier way when we simply don't have the strength for the harder one.

And we are allowed to put something down — even when we don't yet know exactly how we're going to pick it back up.

Monday will come. I'll figure out Monday when it gets here.

But tonight?

Tonight, I'm going to let life be a little lighter.

And after this week, that feels like exactly the right thing to do.

About the Author | Day 233

I'm a soul-led coach, writer, entrepreneur, mother, and recovering perfectionist who is still learning — slowly, imperfectly, and sometimes reluctantly — that life doesn't have to be done the hardest way to count.

For 233 days, I've written here while life was actually happening. Through motherhood and business, faith and exhaustion, healing and heartbreak, laughter and uncertainty, ordinary Tuesdays, and the days when I had absolutely no beautiful lesson to wrap around any of it.

Karma Penguin has never been about pretending we have it figured out. It's about telling the truth while we're still living it. Finding humor when we can. Holding onto faith when things feel heavy. And making a little more room for grace along the way.

Today, I'm learning that grace can look surprisingly ordinary.

Sometimes it looks like choosing the easier way.

Sometimes it looks like saying this is good enough for right now — and meaning it.

And sometimes it looks like closing the laptop, laughing with the people you love, saying a prayer, and trusting that everything you cannot fix tonight will still be waiting patiently for you on Monday.

Maybe we don't always need to push through.

Maybe sometimes, we just need to put it down.

And let ourselves have the weekend.

Day 233 of 365. Let's go.
