Finding Hope in Hard Times

Finding hope in hard times: a tired mother at her laptop smiles as her toddler holds up a stuffed bunny in warm sunset light — Day 189, Karma Penguin.

Yesterday I caught myself laughing.

Not a big one. Just that little laugh that slips out before you can stop it.

And it threw me, because—honestly? Nothing had changed. Everything I'd been dragging around was still right there. The questions with no answers. The work piling up. The heaviness I couldn't shake. None of it had loosened its grip.

But for about ten seconds, I forgot to hold any of it.

That stuck with me. I was reminded that maybe I'd had hope backwards this whole time.

I used to picture it waiting at the finish line. You grind through the hard season, you survive it, things finally click into place—then hope shows up to greet you. A reward for making it.

Now I think it's the other way around.

Hope is what gets you through before anything actually changes. And not in a big, swelling-music, movie kind of way. It's quieter than that. More like an interruption you didn't ask for.

Your kid does something so absurd you can't help but laugh. A friend texts out of nowhere, right when you needed it. You glance up and there's a sunset doing its whole thing whether you noticed or not.

None of it fixes anything. I wish it did. But it reminds me my life is always bigger than the worst thing happening inside it.

What Finding Hope in Hard Times Really Looks Like

So I've been trying to catch those moments more. Not because they're some grand epiphany—but because they're so easy to miss. We spend so much time waiting for life to get better that we forget to notice we're still living it right now.

Maybe that's what hope has looked like the whole time. Not loud. Not obvious. Just showing up again and again, asking me to stay one more day.

I don't know what tomorrow looks like. Nobody does. But life's surprised me enough times that I've stopped letting today have the last word.

And for now, that's enough to keep going. ❤️

About the Author | Day 189

I'm a soul-led coach, writer, entrepreneur, mother, and recovering perfectionist—learning that hope isn't something we stumble upon once life becomes easy. More often, it's something we choose to notice in the middle of ordinary days.

For 189 days straight, I've shown up here. Some days the words come easily. Other days they take a little longer because I'm still living the lesson before I can write about it. Karma Penguin has never been about having all the answers. It's about sharing the journey as honestly as I know how, trusting that if something helped me take one more step forward, it might help someone else too.

I write for the overthinkers, the healing hearts, the exhausted caregivers, the entrepreneurs, the parents, and anyone trying to build a meaningful life while carrying things the world cannot see. My hope is that these stories remind you that healing rarely arrives all at once. More often, it grows quietly through ordinary moments we almost overlook.

Day 189 is a reminder that hope doesn't always arrive with a breakthrough. Sometimes it slips into an ordinary afternoon, asks you to look up for a moment, and gently reminds you that your story is still being written.

Tomorrow is a new day, and it is full of possibility. ❤️
