Signs of Growth: The Hardest Part Is That You Can't Always See It

Today I sat down to plan a road trip. We need to get our car down the coast, which sounds simple enough on paper.
That doesn't sound like much until you add everything riding along with it: hundreds and hundreds of miles, a two-year-old, work deadlines, hotel bookings, snacks, naps, conference calls—and somehow keeping the rest of life running while you figure it all out.
A few months ago, I would've tried to nail down the whole thing in one sitting. Twenty browser tabs open, every stop mapped, every possible disaster rehearsed in my head, fully convinced I couldn't take a single step until every last detail was locked in place.
Today I did something different.
I booked one hotel. Then one flight. And then I stopped.
The rest will come.
As I closed my laptop, I caught myself smiling. It hit me that this might be one of the quietest signs of growth I'd felt in a long time.
The Quietest Signs of Growth Happen Beneath the Surface
Yesterday, I wrote: Have Faith: Maybe Today Was Never About Moving the Mountain. Today, I noticed something else.
Sometimes the biggest signs of growth have nothing to do with what's happening around us. They live in what's shifting inside us.
I still get overwhelmed. I still don't have all the answers. Life still catches me off guard in ways I never see coming. But I don't stay stuck as long as I used to. I bounce back faster. I ask for help sooner. I'm learning to set healthier boundaries—and to hold them when it counts. I trust God more than I once did.
And maybe the biggest change is this: I've finally stopped believing I have to solve my entire future before I'm allowed to take the next step.
A flower doesn't become beautiful the day it blooms. The bloom is just the part the world gets to see. The real work happened quietly, underground, long before anyone noticed.
Maybe we're not so different.
We spend so much energy hunting for visible proof that we're changing that we miss the quiet work happening beneath the surface. The prayers. The healing. The boundaries. The tears. The courage to start over. The decision to keep showing up when quitting would be so much easier.
None of it looks remarkable from the outside. But it's changing us from the inside out.
Just because your growth isn't visible doesn't mean it isn't happening.
If you've been wondering whether your prayers matter... if you've been questioning whether all the inner work is actually adding up to something... if you've been waiting for one clear sign that you're finally moving forward—don't lose heart.
Sometimes God does His deepest work exactly where no one else can see it. One day, what's been growing quietly beneath the surface will bloom in its own time.
Until then—keep praying. Keep healing. Keep taking the next step.
The rest will come.
Waddle on. 🐧 ❤️
About the Author | Day 192
I'm a soul-led coach, writer, entrepreneur, mother, and recovering perfectionist—still learning that growth rarely shows up with fireworks. Most of the time it slips in quietly: in how I respond when life gets hard, in trusting God a little more than I did yesterday, in moving forward without needing every answer first.
For 192 days straight, I've shown up here—through joy and heartbreak, business wins and setbacks I never saw coming, motherhood, healing, unanswered prayers, fresh starts, and all the ordinary moments that quietly shape who we're becoming. Karma Penguin has never been about pretending life is easy or that I have it all figured out. It's about sharing the journey honestly, finding hope in the middle of the uncertainty, and trusting that some of the most meaningful growth happens long before anyone else can see it.
I write for the overthinkers, the healing hearts, the entrepreneurs carrying weight no one else can see, the parents doing their best, and anyone wondering whether all their quiet work is actually making a difference. If that's you today, I hope these words remind you to give yourself a little grace.
Just because your growth isn't visible doesn't mean it isn't happening.
Day 192 is a reminder that the most meaningful signs of growth often happen beneath the surface, long before the world ever sees the bloom.
Tomorrow is a new day, full of hope and possibility. ❤️
